Gary & Johnny Do Warriors Proud !!

Gary McClelland and Johnny Dawson were both prominent in the NCL Eagles 56 – 24 win against French side Languedoc Roussillon at Heworth.

The two had plenty of support at York as their team mates and supporters went over to cheer them on.

Gary McClelland showed why is the top point scorer in the NCL this season as he crossed for the first two tries of the day – the second one a result of a brilliant off load from Johnny. Gary stepped up to convert 7 bringing his tally for the day to 22.

Johnny “The Battering Ram” Dawson was his normal consistent self – never taking a backward step and giving the visitors plenty of cause for concern. More photos in the Matchday Gallery

SADDLEWORTH RANGERS U18s   V   HUNSLET WARRIORS U18s

Gillette Conference Youth League.

Warriors got off to a flying start with a try in the first minute from prop James Woods who also converted. Six minutes later stand- off Jake Reed burst through a gap in the Saddleworth defence to score, Woods again added the points.

This stirred Rangers into action and Warriors had to demonstrate sound defence with Elliot Miller and Danny Cahill to the fore. On 18 minutes Jake Reed, who was running the show, released hooker Matty Scott to cross with full back Cahill adding the extras. This was followed by a try out wide from 2nd row Elliot Morgan, converted from distance by Cahill.

Rangers eventually got onto the scoresheet after 26 minutes following a move started by full back Oliver Kerr and completed by prop Chris Yarwood, centre Nick Ryan converting.

A smart re-start by Warriors loose forward Nathan Sheard allowed Joe Thrush to offload to centre Elliot Miller for the visitors next try, Woods again converting.

Warriors extended their lead immediately after the break as man of the match Jake Reed shrugged off the Rangers defence to touch down under the sticks, Woods again stepping up to convert. Reed was then denied his hat trick as the referee surprisingly ruled a double movement as the ball was grounded.

The remainder of the half was testament to the Warriors` fitness levels as Rangers found it difficult to cope with the speed of winger Joe Potifa and the powerful running of forward Stuart Zubrzycki. An excellent team effort saw Warriors run in three further tries through Blake Banning and a brace from loose forward Nathan Sheard, Cahill converting all of these.
