Hunslet Warriors Under 18s  v  Keighley Cougar Cubs Under 18s

Gillette Conference Youth League.

Both Hunslet Warriors and Keighley Cougars have made an impressive start in the Gillette Conference Youth League and the match proved that there wasn`t a great deal to choose between the two sides.

On 3 minutes Warriors took the lead through man of the match hooker Matty Scott, before a fine passing movement led to an equaliser from Cougars winger Anthony Chapman.

For the next twenty minutes it was end to end entertainment with neither side able to gain supremacy. Outstanding in defence for Warriors was prop Reece Brogdon and full-back Jake Corney, while for Cougars full-back Joe Palmer was the key man.

The deadlock wasn`t broken until 33 minutes when centre Kyle Boardman burst through to restore the Warriors lead. Just before the break winger Danny Cahill outpaced the Cougars defence to cross, only to be judged held up.

With only four points in it, both sides realised they needed a good opening in the second half and it was Warriors Sam Fletcher who crossed to widen the gap with Cahill adding a further two points courtesy of a well placed kick.

Cougars refused to concede and came back strongly but excellent work from Warriors loose forward Nathan Sheard, centre Elliot Miller and 2nd row Blake Banning held them at bay.

However, Cougars were not to be denied and a smart off-load from centre Joseph Connolly to winger Luke Whiteley saw him boost his sides score, with scrum half Ben Stead converting to complete the scoring.

It had been a close fought tie, just shaded by the pace and inventiveness of the Warriors as they continue their march towards the top of the table.

Congratulations to Under18s’ 2nd row Connor Nolan on his selection for the GB RL Community Lions squad to tour South Africa in June 2011.

A great honour for the club and for Connor. Well done!!!!

Milford Marlins U18s   v  Hunslet Warriors U18s

This local derby was certainly a game of two halves with the home side failing to capitalise on a 16 point half time lead.

Warriors started strongly as loose forward Nathan Sheard crashed over the line only for the try to be ruled out for a forward pass. The rest of the half belonged to the Marlins. On 15 minutes prop Joe Ramsden crossed with stand- off Martin Loveridge adding the points; some ten minutes later scrum half Harvey Marsden was put through by loose forward Jack Pickles to score with Loveridge again adding the extras.

Marlins were in the ascendancy with Loveridge and their man of the match 2nd row Jacob Booth running the show. Just before the break winger Jason Hall added a further try in the corner.

Warriors` coach Simon Peach gave half time instructions to play a more expansive game and get the ball out wide. This paid dividends on 53 minutes as winger Danny Cahill scored, with full back Jake Corney converting from a difficult angle.

Ten minutes later Warriors man of the match hooker Mathew Scott shrugged off an attempted tackle to offload to  Corney who outpaced the home defence to score under the posts. Cahill stepping up to convert.

The game was building to an exciting climax as Warriors drew level through forward Jacob Wykman and on 69 minutes the nerveless Cahill ignored the obvious pressure to record the winning points as he coolly converted a crucial penalty.

The win takes Warriors to the top of the table.

Hunslet Warriors U18`s  v  Dudley Hill U18`s

Bradford Dudley Hill proved that they meant business as in the early stages of this game they put Hunslet Warriors under intense pressure with constant attacks on the Warrior`s line.  Hill`s full back Aiden Batey and 2nd row Adam Jefferson were key players, and it was only Warriors sound defence that kept them at bay.

Warriors Man of the Match hooker Matty Scott directed play and had a hand in most moves, with winger Connor Sockett and the powerful forward Stuart Zubrzycki making their mark. It was centre Ryan Lee who registered the only points in the first half as he touched down for Warriors on 20 minutes.

Once again, after stern words from coach Simon Peach, Warriors upped the ante in the second half and played some impressive rugby. Loose forward Nathan Sheard led the way for the home side as he crossed in the corner on 47 minutes followed by full back Jake Corney who outsmarted the Hill defence to boost his side`s score.

Dudley Hill fought back with a try from Andy Marshall and 2nd row Gareth Siddle converting but were pegged back again by a penalty from Warriors’ Corney.

Strong runs from forwards Elliot Morgan, Connor Nolan, and Dave Norton kept Warriors on the front foot and their lead was extended when James Woods threw out a superb pass for scrum half Joe Thrush to score, Corney adding the extras.

Scoring was completed when Hill’s Gareth Siddle crossed on 69 minutes.
